Review: The Library of the Unwritten

4/5

For fans of: Library settings, world hopping, found families, afterlife stories, angels, demons

Synopsis: Claire is the librarian of the Unwritten Wing, a wing of Hell’s Library where unwritten stories sleep. Her job: make sure those stories stay asleep. On a routine mission to track down a wayward character, Claire and her team are mistaken by one of Heaven’s own angels as having in their possession the Devil’s Bible. This leads Claire and her team to journey through various afterlife realms to stay ahead of the angels in getting their hands on an item that can tip the balance in the ongoing war between Heaven and Hell.

Review: It’s been a while since I’ve read an adult fantasy story, so it took a bit of time to get used to the prose and speed. Overall, this was an enchanting read with twists and turns through various afterlife realms as our protagonists from Hell are being chased by agents of Heaven. Claire, our head librarian, has an established routine after taking control of the Hell’s Library and the neutral power it contains. As a fellow stickler for routine, I loved getting to know her and how seriously she takes her role. The world building is really fun, especially as we get to know the cultures of both Heaven and Hell, and the antagonistic history eternity in the making. The Library of the Unwritten is a great start to an enchanting fantasy series.
