Auto-Buy Authors
It is always fun to find new stories by new authors and I always make room in my TBR for them, but I also prioritize several authors and pretty much build my yearly TBR schedule around them. I always want to support new authors, but there is a comfort and a trust in knowing my favourites will have new adventures awaiting each year.
V.E. Schwab
Whenever I hear that V.E. Schwab has a new book coming out, I know I am in for a soulful adventure. From wandering the halls of the library of the dead, to magically jumping between alternative versions of London, to driving the streets of gritty noir midwestern cities, or traveling immortally through time and memory, I know that I am going to find a piece of myself in her writing. Her most recent, and most personal book, The Invisible Life of Addie Larue, was a top 10 favourite from last year.
James Rollins
If you’re a fan of international thrillers that mix science, history, and religion with a group of highly specialized military forces who take on James Bond-esque villains trying to take over or take down the world, his Sigma Force series is for you. I have loved every crazy and complex adventure of the Sigma Force team as they traverse the world hunting down ancient artifacts, crazy new technology, underground lairs, crazy villains ranging from diabolical cabals to radicalized individuals hellbent on destroying the modern world. I’ve also learned so much from the sources he shares with readers of the various topics that inspires Sigma Force’s most recent adventures. Their newest adventure, The Kingdom of Bones, will be out March 9!
Leigh Bardugo
The Grishaverse is, hands down, one of my favourite universes to explore. I adore what Leigh Bardugo has created with such an intricate magical system, different cultures, and rich histories. I am so excited for new fans to join once they discover Shadow and Bone on Netflix in April. From the Grishaverse trilogy, The Language of Thorns short stories, the Six of Crows duology, the King of Scars duology, and The Lives of Saints short stories, there is no shortage of adventure to be had!
Neal Shusterman
I will be honest, I am behind with reading all the works of Neal Shusterman. I only started with the Arc of a Scythe series. From that series alone, he has become one of my auto-buy authors. It shouldn’t be a surprise since he has so many award-winning novels. If you haven’t already read the series, it is, hands down, the best dystopian series I have ever read. The world-building, philosophy, concepts, and characters are so wonderful and original. His next novel, Game Changer, is out next month!
Sarah J. Maas
This list wouldn’t even exist if it were not for Sarah J. Maas. Her work brought me back from the brink of never reading for fun ever again. I can go on and on about my love for both A Court of Thorns and Roses and Throne of Glass. House of Blood and Earth was a top read from 2020 and a world I am so excited to explore further. She is also just hilarious when she and her husband go live on Instagram to talk about her work. Her latest book, A Court of Silver Flames comes out next month and I am already looking forward to my reread of the ACOTAR series starting soon!
